Servers Defined
A server can be many things, but in general terms, it's a computer running an OS (operating system) that's intended to provide a specific service or group of services that are accessed over the network. Servers also have a measure of fault tolerance built-in to guard against failures. Redundant power supplies, and multiple hard drives in various RAID configurations are mission critical for maintaining minimum down time and to simplify data recovery.
Some of the "services" provided by servers include:
- E-Mail Server
- Web Server
- File Server
- Database Server
- Print Server
Server Operating Systems
There are many choices, and what you choose depends on what best suits your needs and your budget. Windows Servers with Active Directory implementations are very common. So are implementations of Enterprise Linux. Most enterprises will choose to run a combination of different OS's depending on what tasks need to be done or what services need to be offered.
