Physical Security

When people think about network security, they think about protecting their networks from outside attacks, hackers and viruses. They almost never think about actual physical security. Network security starts with physical security. This means securing your servers and network closets, and controlling who has access to them.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Who has access to your servers and network closets, and why?
  • Are these areas locked at all times? If not, why?
  • Are workstations with critical information about your network secured? If not, why?
  • Do you lock up all install discs for operating systems and software? If not, why?
  • Are serial numbers for operating systems and software kept in a secure location? If not, why?

Securing Your Network

The things you would normally think about for securing a network are:

  • Anti-Virus and malware programs for servers and workstations.
  • Strong fire-wall and NAT policies.
  • Regular updates and security patches for operating systems and software.
  • Enforcing a strong password policy for all users.
  • Regular audits of user accounts to guard against unauthorized access.
